With numerous X-Men alumni being announced as returning for X-Men: Days of Future Past, the latest person to show an interest is Alan Cumming. Cumming played Nightcrawler in Bryan Singer’s X2.

In recent weeks we’ve seen the returns announced of Sir Ian McKellen as an older Magneto, Michael Fassbender as a younger Magneto, Patrick Stewart as an older Professor X, James McAvoy as a younger Professor X, Nicholas Hoult as Beast and Jennifer Lawrence as Mystique. It’s also well known that Hugh Jackman is in talks to return as Wolverine.

ComingSoon.net recently caught up with Cumming, promoting his new  film, Any Day Now, and asked him of his interest in a new X-Men film. Cumming responded with, “I haven’t gotten the call. Someone told me that Nightcrawler doesn’t appear in the story but I don’t know, I think they would have called by now. It was funny that film because I really like it and everyone really responded to Nightcrawler and enough time has elapsed that I would like to go back to it. Although then, when I did that film, it was sort of the start of this spate of superhero and comic books made into films, so it felt a little more special than it does now. X2 was a really great film, not just as a comic book film. I think it’s one of the films I’d been in that I think of as really good.”

Whether we’ll see Cumming’s Nightcrawler return, who knows? As Cumming says, Nightcrawler is already dead during the original story of Days of Future Past, so doesn’t appear. That said, Magneto also doesn’t feature in the story, yet we’ve got two Magneto’s making an appearance in McKellen and Fassbender. I’d also expect Kitty Pride, played by Ellen Page in X-Men: The Last Stand, to appear, seeing as she is pretty vital to the story. Whether Page reprises the role of Shadowcat is still up for debate.

X-Men: Days of Future Past is set for an 18th July, 2014 release.
