Djimon Hounsou Wants To Play The Black Panther

Marvel’s Black Panther character is an icon for so many, and so many have wanted to see the character appear on the big screen over the years. Sadly, that has yet to happen. Well Djimon Hounsou has recently spoken to the press about his desire to take on the iconic King of Wakanda. Whilst Hounsou most definitely has the chops fall it – just watch Blood Diamond – he’s already set to be involved in the Marvel cinematic world, playing the villainous Korath the Pursuer in James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy. Still, that doesn’t seem to concern the actor.

When asked which Marvel character he’d like to play, the Hounsou said, “It would be an honour to be T’Challa. It would have to be done right, given the history of that character and that comic. I have a foot in the Marvel comics world now, so we’ll see where they’re going to take that. I never read any comic books when I was younger, I just remember one of my friends in Africa at a very young age used to carry these animated booklets with him – those were comics books, and he was passionate about them.”

To tie this together, Hounsou previously voiced the character in the short-ran Black Panther animated series. The actor won a whole heap of praise for his work on that show, so I’m sure he’d be more than up to scratch.

Whether a Black Panther film actually happens, nobody knows right now. The likes of Hounsou and, previously, Morris Chestnut have talked about their love, and there’s a lot of fans that are waiting to see that character on the screen, be it on his own or as part of an Avengers film. Plus, let’s face it, the Marvel world is a little short when it comes to multi-cultural/multi-national heroes. So far, we’ve only really had Wesley Snipes Blade way back in the day.

Here’s hoping T’Challa gets some lovin’ somewhere down the line. Hell, he could even be used to bring the varying franchises of The Avengers and X-Men together at some point! After all, he’s a member of The Avengers who is also married to Storm at one point.

Simply put, Hounsou would be perfect.

  1. By the time the film comes out, Hounsou will be a bit old for the character if you want the movie to have subsequent sequels. And like you said, he’s already going to be in a Marvel movie. Someone else deserves a chance to shine.

  2. Yeah he would have been good, but again the age thing, he would be hitting 50 by the time the film was released and the audience would be able to see it.

I think Chadwick Boseman is the best for the role, although D.B. Woodside looks like he’s straight from the comics, He’s 44 but he looks the part more than any other, and unlike the the previous suggestions, age doesn’t seem to affect his appearance.

    • Very good suggestions. I could live with either of those two. As for the age, Marvel don’t seem overly fussed, seeing as Robert Downey Jr. is 48 at present, will be 50 by the time Avengers 2 rolls around. That said, they have had 3 solo films and a team-up out of him so far, so it’s not like he’s going in cold at that age.

I’m definitely intrigued to see who ends up in the role, as surely T’Challa has to be featured at some point?

      • Seems like a no-brainer to include him in an Avengers movie, then give him enough ‘moments that matter’ to spawn a solo movie.

It’s interesting to see where Marvel/Disney plan to go. They’ve already said no more Iron Man films for now. At present, Phase Three is Ant-Man, Doc Strange, Avengers 3… and apparently Thor 3. That leaves one space. There’s no news either way on a third Cap film, then there’s talk of Hawkeye getting killed off in Avengers 2, so that rules him out. Guess there’s also Black Widow, but, again, talk is she may get killed off in Age of Ultron.

        Fingers crossed for BP.

      • Whoa killing off Hawkeye and black widow? I can’t imagine marvel doing that but you never know.

And yeah Daredevil coming back would be epic. In all honesty, I think that if Ben Afleck would have been cast as Daredevil now, in today’s superhero scene, he would have nailed the role. Just my opinion.

      • The logic is that Ultron needs to be made to look like a legitimate threat. To create such a threat, there’s gotta be some collateral damage along the way. Also, with Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch joining The Avengers, some characters need to make way. That’s the rumour at the moment.

As for DD, big fan. Couldn’t agree more with you, sir. You might find this of interest –

      • Yeah but they seem like easy targets, Marvel should be really unpredictable and have Ultorn kill the whole team, then have Ant Man alter time and space to bring them all back . . . I’m joking obviously.
