Willem Dafoe Not A Fan Of “The Amazing Spider-Man”

After playing Norman Osborn, aka the Green Goblin, in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy, Willem Dafoe has been speaking to Total Film about his thoughts on Marc Webb’s recent The Amazing Spider-Man. It turns out he’s not much of a fan…

Dafoe said, “I saw a trailer for the first Spider-Man reboot and I thought, ‘This is crazy! It’s not shot for shot, but it’s the same story.’ I thought, ‘This is sort of a cynical approach to making money.’ The way Sam Raimi approached it, it was pure in its intentions.”

With The Amazing Spider-Man 2 due for a release next year, the Norman Osborn role will be played by Chris Cooper, with him expected to become the Green Goblin at the climax of the Spidey sequel.

    • I’ve got a lot of time for both of them, purely because I can’t get enough Spidey. That said, both have some flaws. I did massively enjoy TASM though, and I’m definitely looking forward to the next 3 films in the series, as it seems they’re taking the ‘slowly slowly’ approach, with some villains being introduced in small parts then expanded on later, with the Sinister Six also shaping up 🙂

      • I am with you there, completely. I just think Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man missed a lot of things…

        Oh definitely, I am so excited about these.

        Is he basing what he said purely on a trailer?!

      • Pretty sure Dafoe is, yep…

        As for Raimi’s films.There’s so very few films I was excited about as much as Spider-Man 2. I remember the trailer would also get me. Every. Single. Time.

        I also feel a bit sorry for Sam, as he had a lot of the control taken away from him in Spidey 3, and he didn’t get to make the film he wanted. I think the plan was to just get as much Venom in as possible. I absolutely love Venom, but that wasn’t Venom to me.

        Teehee, I hear you. Look, there was enough to make them okay, but they way that they ENDED that trilogy? Damn, not a good way to close off.

        I agree with you, left it pretty bad in the end. That Venom peeved a lot of people. My other half nearly flew into a rage. He really digs the whole Venom thing but that just grated on him, and I agree. Completely not what it should have been.

  3. “It’s not shot for shot, but it’s the same story”. Seriously? Of course it is, nobody is going to totally revamp the origins of Spider-Man. Amazing Spiderman is, in my opinion, far better than Raimi’s Spider-Man. I never bought into Maguire as Peter Parker and the tone of all his films, especially the third, never hit me quite right.
