The second in a trilogy of films adapting the enduringly popular masterpiece “The Hobbit,” by J.R.R. Tolkien, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug continues the adventure of the title character Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman) as he journeys with the Wizard Gandalf (Ian McKellen) and thirteen Dwarves, led by Thorin Oakenshield (Richard Armitage) on an epic quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor. The film opens in 3D, 2D and IMAX theaters on December 13.

  1. I cannot say that I was enamoured with the first outing… they really could have made ONE movie for the Hobbit… this is getting extreme. I am not particularly looking forward to it.

What was your take on it?

    • I was tad torn. Some of the visuals were stunning, and I really enjoyed the new filming technique… although it gave a lot of people a headache. Story-wise, the film was OK, but it’s a bit of a stretch to make a trilogy out of The Hobbit.

      • The Hobbit was a skinny book man. They gave the entire Lord of the Rings trilogy a trilogy – just three films for three books. We only needed one for The Hobbit. Seriously now. I really was excited for it till I saw it. Like you say, some pretty things to look at, but man come on!
