A Familiar Face Is The First Name Confirmed For “Star Wars: Episode VII”

It’s all been relatively quiet on the Star Wars: Episode VII front over the last few months, but we’ve now finally got our first confirmation on a character that will definitely be appearing. Verified by Lucasfilm, it’s official: R2-D2 is in Episode VII. Not just that, but everyone’s favourite R2 unit has been constructed by two long-time fans this time out. The pair in question are Lee Towersey and Oliver Steeples, members of the worldwide R2-D2 Builders Club.

Discussing how they came on board, Steeples said, “It all started when Kathleen Kennedy toured the R2-D2 Builders area at Celebration Europe this past summer in Germany. She posed for pictures with us, looked at all the droids we’d built and was very complimentary. I mentioned that the R2-D2 Builders in the UK were available if required, as a semi-joke. When I was contacted to work on the film by [executive producer] Jason McGatlin, it was on her recommendation.”

Steeples and Towersey are now both working full-time on Episode VII at Pinewood Studios. How awesome is that?!

Towersey added, “We know the pressures of filming, prepping, and being able to assure reliability throughout the shoot. We have a good knowledge of Artoo, with  large stock of parts for reference and drawings, plus we know what is involved throughout the whole building process, as well as potential problems we need to avoid.”

So, finally we get some character confirmation. Here’s hoping that Luke, Han, and Leia confirmation is just around the corner. Oh, and where you have R2-D2, surely there has to be C3-PO as well?
