Latest “The Amazing Spider-Man 2” Promo Features Spencer Smythe

Another week, another post from the Daily Bugle’s faux Tumblr account to promote The Amazing Spider-Man 2. This time out, we get an interview between the Bugle and Spencer Smythe. Those familiar with the Spider-Man comic books will know Smythe as the creator of the Spider-Slayer robots that are sent to hunt Webhead on a regular basis.

The ‘interview’ reads as follows:

OsCorp Industries wants to usher in an age of robotics, and has pumped piles of cash into robotics research. My interview mission? Pry some secrets out of OsCorp’s Head Engineer, Spencer Smythe.
DB: Can you summarize your recent work in one word?
Smythe: Mobility.
DB: Elaborate, please.
Smythe: If you wanted an elaborate answer, why did you ask for a single word?
DB: Tell me something no one else knows about your research.
Smythe: We have made significant breakthroughs in the field of manned flight technology, fluidity of movement, speed and dexterity evinced by our larger robotic devices.
DB: Hardware or software?
Smythe: Both. One feeds the other. Better machines with enhanced artificial intelligence networks making informed, logical choices at greater speeds. Better bodies and better brains.
DB: And how do you see this being commercially applied?
Smythe (laughing): I don’t do marketing. Engineering innovation doesn’t result from a focus on revenue.
DB: There are rumors the NYPD is interested.
Smythe: Well, if you want to catch the right fly, you have to spin the right web.
DB: Very clever. One last thing, how is it working with your son?
Smythe: Alistair is a brilliant young engineer and I’m thrilled to see his career develop. I’d better watch my back or he’ll have my job before too long!
So, quite a few teases there, including Alistair Smythe, for future Spidey films.

As for The Amazing Spider-Man 2, the official synopsis reads:

We’ve always known that Spider-Man’s most important battle has been within himself: the struggle between the ordinary obligations of Peter Parker and the extraordinary responsibilities of Spider-Man. But in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Peter Parker finds that a great conflict lies ahead.

It’s great to be Spider-Man (Andrew Garfield). For Peter Parker, there’s no feeling quite like swinging between skyscrapers, embracing being the hero, and spending time with Gwen (Emma Stone). But being Spider-Man comes at a price: only Spider-Man can protect his fellow New Yorkers from the formidable villains that threaten the city. With the emergence of Electro (Jamie Foxx), Peter must confront a foe far more powerful than he. And as his old friend, Harry Osborn (Dane DeHaan), returns, Peter comes to realise that all of his enemies have one thing in common: OsCorp.

Released worldwide on 2nd May, 2014, we lucky UK folks get The Amazing Spider-Man 2 on 18th April, 2014.

Keep an eye out for the trailer tomorrow.

  1. That’s a funny interview! “If you wanted an elaborate answer why did you ask for a single word?” It’s hard to see a whole film being built around Spider-Slayers, but it would make for a cool opening sequence or something.
