Similar in tone to Insidious, The Conjuring is based on the real-life case of the Perron family. During the early ‘70s, the family’s Rhode Island home was the scene of a paranormal attack. Unknown to the family, a horde of murders, suicides and general nastiness had occurred for over 100 years at the site. Initially just a few strange goings-on, it soon becomes apparent that there is something in the house; something that has bad things in mind. Before long, the family makes the decision to call in the Warrens, Ed (Wilson) and Lorraine (Farmiga), who are a married couple that specialise in demonic cases.
Right, firstly, this film definitely matches Wan’s earlier films, likely being the best of the bunch. Atmospheric, tone-perfect and with scares aplenty, The Conjuring is simply one of the best horror films in recent memory. With the film set in the ‘70s, Wan captures the spirit of the time expertly, delivering a similar tone and texture to many films of the 1970s. Amazingly, there is no gore, no explicit language, no sex – this film gets by on scares alone.
Without throwing scares out there for the sake of it, The Conjuring finds its strength in its subtleties and timing. ..

Yeah, massive fan of this film. Along with Big Bad Wolves, it’s one of the best horrors I can remember seeing in the last 10 years or so.

Is Indiana that remote? Pretty sure I’d have never gotten to see the film where I am if it was for covering it for a magazine. Big shame that so many might not get to see it until a home release.

I am a HUGE fan of The Conjuring. I thought it was incredibly well done. I really didn’t like Insidious, so I was so happy that this one was one of the best horror movies I have come across in years. Absolutely awesome review!

Yeah, one of the best horrors that I can remember seeing over the last decade or more. That and Big Bad Wolves. Did quite enjoy Sinister, too, in fairness. I didn’t mind Insidious too much, but watched Insidious 2 (review pending) last night – not so much of a fan.

I didn’t think Sinister was that bad. Plot holes galore, but overall it was rather fun. Got to a messy place but got over it quickly too. Oh well.

Off the top of my head, the first two Insidious films cost $7m to make… and brought in nearly $300m between them. That’d be why they’re milking it…

We still haven’t even had The Evil Dead release here yet (rumoured for next year thought it was supposed to have come in August), so I intensely doubt that Big Bad Wolves will make it. Will have to source it some other way 😦

Evil Dead really surprised me. I was completely against it, but it’s a really good little film; faithful to the original yet different enough to be its own film.
Hopefully the powers that be sort their shit out and hook SA up with those films.

I enjoyed it, I must say. I was pretty excited to see what Alvarez was going to do in order to use minimalistic CGI and it worked, I had a lot of fun with it.
This is going to sound awful, but those slowpokes have forgotten that this is the era that the internets reigns supreme!
