Ed Helms Lands Lead Role In “The Naked Gun” Reboot

A few months ago, word came out that Paramount Pictures were looking to relaunch their Naked Gun franchise. All had gone a tad quiet on the subject recently, but Variety now has confirmation that The Hangover‘s Ed Helms has signed on to play the lead role of Detective Frank Drebdin; a role made famous by Leslie Nielsen (RIP).

This reboot currently has Thomas Lennon and Ben Garant working on a script for Paramount. The duo are best known for their work on Reno 911 and Night at the Museum.

Based on the brilliantly funny Police Squad, the first Naked Gun was released in 1988. The Naked Gun 2 1/2: The Smell of Fear would follow in 1991, with Naked Gun: The Final Insult released in 1994. The trilogy grossed a total of $275 million worldwide.
