The New “Naked Gun” Will be a Sequel

Ed Helms Naked Gun

The end of 2013 saw Ed Helms announced as taking on the role of Frank Drebin in the reboot of The Naked Gun. Speaking to Crave Online, Ben Garant, co-screenwriter of the new film, has revealed that this next Naked Gun is going to be more like a sequel than the presumed reboot many expected.

Garant said, “Right now we’re caling it Episode IV – A New Hope. That will change, but that’s the working title. Our take is that Ed Helms is Frank Drebin, no relation. That’s how he introduces himself.”

Right, so a new lead character that just happens to share the same name as the previous lead character? That’s certainly a unique approach.

Garant continued, “We are trying to reinvent the world because that world was very ‘Dragnet,’ but we’re trying to fit in 100 jokes a page. It’s going to be a lot of fun. We’re very much embracing the style.”

Based on the brilliantly funny Police Squad, the first Naked Gun was released in 1988. The Naked Gun 2 1/2: The Smell of Fear would follow in 1991, with Naked Gun: The Final Insult released in 1994. The trilogy grossed a total of $275 million worldwide.

No release date has been announced for this new installment.
