Wow! Let’s just say I’m in shock with this announcement. Remember Paul Rudd being officially announced by Marvel to play Ant-Man in Edgar Wright’s 2015 movie? Remember how Marvel carefully never mentioned Hank Pym, the most famous Ant-Man, by name? Remember those stories that Wright’s plan of several years ago was to include both the Hank Pym AND Scott Lang versions of Ant-Man in his film… and that the movie was now just to focus on Henry Pym? Well, consider all bets as now off.
Yes, in a surprise move, Marvel Studios have announced that Michael Douglas has joined Ant-Man to play Hank Pym. Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige said, “With Hank Pym’s rich history in the Marvel Universe, we knew we needed an actor capable of bringing the weight and stature to the role that the character deserves. We felt incredibly relieved when Michael Douglas agreed to step into the part with the charm and fortitude he brings to every character he inhabits, and couldn’t be more excited to see what he will do to bring Hank Pym to life.”
So we’ll be getting an older Hank Pym, who will presumably mentor and give his approval to a younger Ant-Man, Scott Lang, as played by Paul Rudd.
In an interview with SuperheroHype several years ago, Edgar Wright himself said, “The idea that we have for the adaptation is to actually involve both Henry Pym and Scott Lang. So you actually do a prologue where you see Pym as Ant-Man in action in the ’60s in sort of ‘Tales to Astonish’ mode basically, and then the contemporary, sort of flash-forward, is Scott Lang’s story, and how he comes to acquire the suit, how he crosses paths with Henry Pym, and then, in an interesting sort of Machiavellian way, teams up wit him.”
As mentioned, that was Pym’s words from a few years ago. How his Ant-Man story is at right now, nobody knows. With Scott Long and Hank Pym both confirmed for the film, one would have to suspect that the movie’s plot may well still be following the rough plan that Wright initially had laid out.
Ant-Man is set to kick off Marvel’s Phase Three of films on 31st July, 2015.
