With The CW’s The Flash show now in development, The Hollywood Reporter has word that Law & Order‘s Jesse L. Martin has been cast as Detective West in the upcoming series. Detective West is the father of Barry Allen’s ‘one true,’ Iris.

THR’s report describes the character as, “An honest, blue-collar cop who is a surrogate father to Barry. A soulful, funny and caring father to Iris – Barry’s potential love interest – West came up through the foster care system and took Barry in after his mother’s slaying and father’s imprisonment. He believes in Barry and supports his efforts to prove his father’s innocence.”

The character of Detective West is set to be a series regular in The Flash. Ernie Hudson, best known for Ghostbusters and The Crow, was originally linked to the role before Martin’s casting.

The Flash is being worked on by Arrow co-creators Greg Berlanti and Andrew Kreisberg. DC’ Geoff Johns is writing the script for the pilot episode, set to be directed by David Nutter, who also directed the pilot episode of Arrow. Grant Gustin will be playing Barry Allen, aka The Flash, in the show.
