For all you FF fans out there, I’m sorry to have to break this news to you.
Josh Trank’s Fantastic Four reboot is still looking to cast several roles and, as such, is actively recruiting cast members through the Acting-Auditions website. As a result, the plot synopsis has been revealed for Trank’s movie… and it doesn’t read well. Brace yourselves…
“The Fantastic Four will tell the story of two very young friends, Reed Richards and Ben Grimm. After an event transforms the boys, they find themselves empowered with bizarre new abilities. Reed becomes a scientific genius who can stretch, twist and re-shape his body to inhuman proportions. Ben becomes a monstrous, craggy humanoid with orange, rock-like skin and super strength. However, the two end up being owned by the government and used as weapons. But after they mature, two others with powers come into the picture – Sue Storm “The Invisible Girl” and Johnny Storm “The Human Torch”.
On a related note, Miles Teller, who has had discussions for the Reeds Richards/Mr. Fantastic role, has been speaking to Collider about whether he is in shape enough to play a superhero. He responded, “I know, you know, if that were to happen, I think the characters would be taken in a different direction than the kind of blue suits and stuff from the franchise that had previously been done, which you’d have to if you’re gonna reboot something, you really got to kind of put your own spin on it. But with that being said, all I need is, like, a couple of weeks to just get my body back in shape. So the answer to that is yes, I could get back in the shape.”
Regardless of whether or not Teller is in shape, that massively alarming thing for me is that Trank’s movie is looking to move away from the iconic blue Fantastic Four outfits. Added to that, I personally cannot buy the 26-year-old Teller as Reed Richards, one of the most mature, intelligent beings in the Marvel universe. Then there’s the whole fact that were going to get a Fantastic Four that are government agents… and Reed Richards becomes a genius by accident?!?! BY ACCIDENT?!?! Yeesh…
So, yeah, you could say that I’m a little baffled/confused/annoyed/frustrated at this.
Simon Kinberg has finished the initial screenplay for Fantastic Four, with casting due to happen imminently. At present, joining Teller, the other two front-runners for the Reed Richards role are Game of Thrones duo Richard Madden and Kit Harington. For Sue Storm, we have Saoirse Ronan and Kate O’Mara. The Johnny Storm gig seems to be a given for Chronicle‘s Michael B. Jordan, and the early word is that The Thing will be purely CGI. Don’t even get me started on that one.
At present, Josh Trank’s Fantastic Four reboot is set for a 19th June, 2015 release.
