Deadline is reporting that NBC’s Constantine has now cast its lead role, with Welsh actor Matt Ryan having landed the John Constantine gig. Ryan is best known for his role in Criminal Minds: Suspect Behaviour. It’s also being reported that pilot’s synopsis reads, “When the daughter of a late friend is targeted by demons, Constantine steps in to save her.”
As for the character of Constantine, he was created by the legendary Alan Moore, and is a bit of a lovable rogue. The supernatural, chain-smoking detective first appeared in the Swamp Thing title in 1985, before getting his own Hellblazer title at Vertigo in 1988. The Constantine solo title got up to 300 issues before being relaunched as part of DC’s New 52 initiative. It is believed that this newer, younger version of Constantine will be the basis of the TV series.
David Goyer and Daniel Cerone have been working on the script for the pilot, which will be directed by Neil Marshall.
