Whilst Fox’s Gotham will not be based around Bruce Wayne, he will be appearing. Jim Gordon, played by The OC‘s Ben McKenzie, will be the focal point of the show, but a young Bruce will appear. Now cast in the role of the future Batman is Touch‘s 13-year-old David Mazouz. Joining him in the show will be Camren Bicondova as Selina Kyle, aka the future Catwoman, and The Mentalist‘s Drew Powell as a new character called Butch Gilzean.
This younger version of Bruce Wayne is described as “not a playboy-by-day, vigilante-by-night, but a preteen who as been sentenced to a solitary life after his parents’ tragic murders.” If done correctly, this could be a truly fascinating character, showing a child struggling to be a child after his world is completely shattered. Again, this version of Selina Kyle will be a lot younger that what we’ve seen previously, and is described as “a teen orphan who is suspicious and wholly unpredictable. A skilled pickpocket and street thief, she is pretty dangerous when cornered.” Sounds like this kittens got claws.
As mentioned, Butch Gilzean, to be played by Powell, is a completely new character that has been created specifically for the show. He’ll be second-in-command to Jada Pinkett Smith’s gangster boss Fish Mooney. That gang also happens to include a certain Oswald Cobblepot (Robin Lord Taylor), aka the future Pengiun. What’s the betting that Gilzean ends up getting bumped-off by Cobblepot in his ascendancy to supervillain status?
Away from these characters, Gotham has also cast Donal Logue as Detective Harvey Bullock, Zabryna Guevara as Captain Sarah Essen, Erin Richards as Gordon’s wife-to-be Barbara Kean and Sean Pertwee as Alfred Pennyworth.
The Mentalist‘s Bruno Heller was written the pilot for the show and will serve as an executive producer going forward. CSI‘s Danny Cannon will direct the pilot, and a full series has already been confirmed. The pilot is expected to hit towards the middle of this year.
