Update on Spidey Spin-Offs “The Sinister Six” and “Venom”

2380337-sinister_sixWith Sony Pictures looking to expand their Spider-verse, it was confirmed a few months back that not only will there be The Amazing Spider-Man 3 and The Amazing Spider-Man 4 but there will be two villain-centric spin-off films, The Sinister Six and Venom. Now, speaking to SFX, producers Matt Tolmach and Avi Arad has been providing a few updates on these Spidey spin-offs.

On how the villain-focussed films will work, the producer said, “Obviously questions of traditional hero/villain dynamics have to be looked at. At the same, it’s an awesome challenge because some of the greatest characters are in fact villains, and how you construct that is so much fun. People love those bad characters if they’re good bad characters, and love to watch them. And nobody’s all good, nobody’s all bad, and so where we end up with that story, I think, is a really awesome challenge, and we all smile when we think about what you can do. It’s definitely a badass group of people and I think it’s going to be a ton of fun to watch them.”

Discussing the complexity of these villainous characters, the legendary Avi Arad added, “With Marvel characters, the villains are victims of circumstance. If you look at our villains, none of them were born like that. Our villains are nice and complex and in the world of film writing you can play with that, you can make some wonderful things out of it. The Spider-Man universe has amazing villains, they are all character driven. Our villains all represent a different side of the misunderstood, and some of them unfortunately turned to the dark side. Venom happened to be a phenomenal character. With Eddie Brock, or if you do Flash Thompson, it doesn’t matter who is going to be inside the suit – what’s important is that a man like him is going to realise there comes a time when you wake up in the morning and say ‘How did I get here? There must be a better way.'”

Alex Kurtzman, Roberto Orci and Ed Solomon are currently penning Venom, which will be directed by Kurtzman, whilst The Cabin in the Woods‘ Drew Goddard will write and direct The Sinister Six.

  1. There has been a lot of talk about villain-centric spinoffs over the past few years. Have any actually gotten made? Just thinking about mainstream cinema and the focus on hero narratives, I am really not sure how it would work. Unless they just slap a villain’s name in the title and tell the same story.

    • Maybe the Sinister Six flick will be told from the group’s POV in a threat to take down Spidey. Maybe one of their own goes rogue and they set out to take them down, maybe they target Venom. And as for the Venom film, he’s easy to play off as an anti-hero or even flat-out hero. It’ll be interesting to see how they do it.

As for the other villain-centric films in the past, I don’t think any have been this set in stone before, and the only one I can really think of that was planned was the Magneto one, although that character definitely falls into a grey area at times.
