With the Roberto Orci-helmed Star Trek 3 now confirmed for a 2016 release, now comes word from the director that the movie will take place in deep space.

Speaking on the Humans From Earth podcast, Orci revealed, “In this movie they are closer than they are to the original series characters than you have ever seen. They have set off on their five-year mission. So their adventure is going to be in deep space.”

The direct is currently working on the movie’s script with Patrick McKay and J.D Payne, with a release conveniently timed for 2016 which just so happens to be the franchise’s 50th anniversary.

  1. Will be excited to see what Orci brings to this project. Like the fact that they are finally on their five year mission. I do wonder if they will branch out beyond three films. Trilogies are the norm nowadays, but Star Trek has never stopped at that many.
