A few weeks ago we got word that Guillermo del Toro was already working on a script for a sequel to last year’s Pacific Rim. Today brings confirmation that Pacific Rim 2 will be released through Legendary Pictures and Universal Studios on 7th April, 2017. Not only that, but we’ll be getting an animated series and some further graphic novels.
Speaking to BuzzFeed, del Toro confirmed, “The characters I love will return. Raleigh, Mako, Newt, Gottlieb, and who knows, maybe even Hannibal Chau – but we are taking them into a fresh territory that will display amazing sights and battles. The first film set the stage and now we’re ready to have a blast.”
Now if that wasn’t enough, the writer/director went on to release a video to further confirm the news of the sequel, animated show, and some continuation of the Pacific Rim: Tales from Year Zero graphic novels:
Pretty cool, right?
After costing a whopping $190 million and doing poorly upon its US release, a sequel to Pacific Rim seemed near impossible. Luckily for del Toro, the film did strong numbers in international markets and on home release, culminating in a worldwide box office of $411 million.
Expect more on this as it develops.
