Sony’s Spider-Verse in a Huge Mess… Another Spin-Off Film?!

Could we get to see Carnage and Venom?

Could we get to see Carnage and Venom?

The last few days have seen a few big developments in the world of Sony’s Spider-Man. We already know that The Amazing Spider-Man 3 has been put back from 2016 to 2018 and that The Sinister Six and Venom are taking priority, but now comes some word on a new title for the Venom outing and an entirely different entry to this world.

On the Venom flick, it’s said that rather than just being called Venom, the title has now been changed to Venom Carnage. Really?!?! As somebody that had massive problems with The Amazing Spider-Man 2 for the references, nods, names, and characters that the film tried to shoehorn into its world, the apparent adding of Cletus Kasady’s Carnage to this spin-off movie just baffles me. Don’t get me wrong, I love Venom, even more-so the maniacal, crazed Carnage, but this is all just too soon. Just stop, Sony. Stop there. I get it; you want the multi-layered world that Marvel Studios and Disney have established. That takes time. Yes, there were plenty of references in Marvel’s first few films, but they were minor, like Cap’s shield in Iron Man, or Stark appearing at the end of The Incredible Hulk. Marvel/Disney took a slow build approach, and now they are reaping the huge, huge, huge rewards of their patience, crafting, and their intricate storytelling. It takes time to establish such a world, and this is far too soon for Carnage. Hell, if anything, it’s likely far too soon to be seeing Venom before Spidey even gets his third outing in this redo Spidey-verse. But that’s not all…

Even more bizarrely, Sony are looking to develop a female-driven movie to exist in their Spidey world. This film is supposedly to follow Drew Goddard’s The Sinister Six, which is set for an 11th November, 2016 release, although the “star” of the story is currently unknown. It could be that Felicia Hardy, seen in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 as a right-hand woman of sorts to Harry Osborn, takes on the Black Cat moniker that she is most famous for. Or could it that one of the various Spider-Women arrive and take centre-stage? Could it be that Gwen Stacy returns from the dead and takes on the Venom persona, pulling a little from the Ultimate Spider-Man title.

Yeesh, this just makes my head hurt…

So, as it stands, we’ll get Alex Kurtzman’s Venom Carnage and Drew Goddard’s The Sinister Six in 2016, a female-led spin-off film after that, then Marc Webb’s The Amazing Spider-Man 3 in 2017. This is just all kinds of wrong. I love Spidey, so will you please, please, please just stop fucking with him Sony?! Like, seriously, please. I can feel a long few years ahead…

      • I agree. Would say the same thing about DC but even they seem to be planning things better than Sony at the moment. Frankly, Spiderman is not in good shape right now. He’s in the downturn of his movie life at the moment, and I hope he starts going back up hill again soon.

  1. Sony really are just a joke at the moment. Ever since they started putting that bloody huge Sony logo at the start of the movie, product placement has gotten borderline unbearable (speaking as a massive James Bond fan, this is not something that usually bothers me). The movies, especially the second, are terrible. And they are so desperately trying to copy what Marvel have achieved with seemingly no knowledge of what made Marvel so damn good.

Disney/Marvel should just fork out a billion or two and get the rights back before Sony screw the character up from a film perspective irreversibly.
